New PSNS Dry Dock Project Could Reshape Bremerton for Years

The Navy’s planned Multi-Mission Dry Dock at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility will bring years of major construction activity to Bremerton — along with significant impacts on traffic, parking, workforce demand and the local economy. 

A recent Kitsap Sun report highlights the scale of the project, which is part of the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program. Construction is expected to continue into the late 2030s and include extensive demolition, dredging, excavation and concrete work along the Bremerton waterfront.

During peak construction, hundreds of workers and significant volumes of materials will need to move in and out of the shipyard. The Navy is considering strategies including adjusted work shifts, transit, ridesharing and increased use of barges to reduce truck traffic through downtown Bremerton. 

For Kitsap County, the project also represents a major long-term economic opportunity. Contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and professional service firms throughout the region will be needed to support the work.

That opportunity was a major focus of KEDA’s August 20 Kitsap Industrial Readiness Summit and NAVFAC Northwest Industry Day, where nearly 200 participants gathered to hear directly from Navy leaders and connect with prime contractors and potential partners.

KEDA will continue working with the Navy, local jurisdictions and the business community to help Kitsap prepare for both the impacts and opportunities associated with this historic investment.
