PSE investigating non-wires alternatives to help meet transmission capacity needs in Kitsap County

BELLEVUE, Wash. (Feb. 9, 2024) – Today, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) issued a request for proposals (RFP) for non-wires alternatives to an electric transmission system capacity need in Kitsap County, Washington.

PSE intends to explore a variety of solution options to its capacity need to ensure continued and reliable service for customers in the county. Non-wires solutions may include energy storage systems (ESS) and local CETA (Clean Energy Transformation Act)-eligible renewable or non-emitting energy resources that meet PSE’s energy and capacity needs.

Through this RFP, PSE is making progress toward achieving the goals outlined in the state’s clean energy policies, like CETA, and its own aspirational Beyond Net Zero Carbon goal by 2045.

Responses to the Kitsap Non-wires Alternatives RFP can be submitted beginning March 29, 2024 through 6 p.m. PST May 24, 2024. After the submittal period closes, PSE will evaluate responses and potentially integrate them into transmission capacity solutions. PSE will compare the potential solutions in terms of cost, risks and benefits to determine a final solution, which may be made up of a portfolio of resources.

A solution for Kitsap County’s transmission capacity needs is expected to be finalized in 2024. PSE will determine the estimated in-service date after finalizing the solution.
