A Journey of Survival and Transformation
Darryl Riley's story is one of survival, resilience, and transformation. Growing up in poverty on Chicago's West Side, Darryl faced challenges that many Black males in America know all too well. Despite a difficult childhood in a broken home and the harsh realities of life in a marginalized community, Darryl worked hard in school, hoping to rise above his circumstances. However, a wrongful felony conviction at just 16 years old disrupted his dreams and thrust him into a cycle of incarceration and struggle.
Darryl's life took a significant turn during the War on Drugs in the 1980s, leading to a period of incarceration. Yet, during these difficult times, a paradigm shift occurred for Darryl. He realized the power of resilience and the importance of breaking the cycles that kept so many people of color bound by poverty, recidivism, and systemic oppression. Inspired by the resolve of his ancestors and driven by a deep desire to create positive change, Darryl emerged from his experiences with a renewed sense of purpose.
In 2020, Darryl co-founded The Up From Slavery Initiative (UFSI), an organization dedicated to healing, informing, and empowering marginalized communities through racial justice, financial literacy, and wellness. Today, Darryl Riley is a survivor, a beacon of hope, and a catalyst for change in Kitsap County and beyond.
Empowering Communities Through Financial Literacy
One of the critical pillars of UFSI is financial literacy, a crucial component in the fight for economic empowerment. Darryl understands that many of the challenges faced by marginalized communities stem from a need for more knowledge about managing money. "We knew early on that most of the problems people of color encounter—about 70%—are tied to how to make a dollar and what to do with it once you have it," Darryl explained.
UFSI has made significant strides in creating culturally and socially relevant financial literacy programs. These programs have educated over 250 young people, providing them with the tools they need to build sustainable wealth. Graduates of these courses receive a $200 check-in and savings account, giving them a tangible start on their journey to financial independence. The impact of these efforts is evident, with some young participants already starting their businesses.
Addressing Racial Injustice and Economic Barriers
Darryl's commitment to racial justice is deeply personal. Having experienced the American prison system firsthand, he recognizes mass incarceration as a modern form of racial injustice rooted in the exploitation of free labor. UFSI has addressed this issue by conducting re-entry simulations, which offer a unique perspective on the challenges faced by those re-entering society after incarceration, highlighting the systemic barriers that often prevent successful reintegration.
UFSI's efforts extend beyond education and advocacy; they are actively working to create tangible solutions. Darryl's vision includes the development of "houses of emancipation," where individuals newly released from incarceration can find employment and secure housing on their first day of freedom. This initiative has garnered support from local officials and is a testament to UFSI's commitment to breaking the cycle of recidivism.
Inspiring Leadership in Kitsap's Black-Owned Businesses
Darryl Riley's journey from incarceration to a successful entrepreneur is a powerful example of resilience and leadership. As the owner of three businesses, including a Snap Fitness franchise, Darryl has become a subject matter expert in entrepreneurship and financial literacy. His success, however, is not just about personal achievement. Darryl believes that the well-being of the entire community measures true success. This belief led him to create UFSI, ensuring that the benefits of his knowledge and experiences are shared with others.
Darryl's story inspires Black-owned businesses in Kitsap County and beyond. His message is clear: perseverance, consistency, and a commitment to uplifting others are the keys to overcoming the challenges faced by marginalized communities. As Kitsap celebrates Black-Owned Business Month, Darryl Riley is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of empowering our communities.
