ECONOMIC ADVANTAGE OF RECREATIONAL FACILITY INVESTMENT IN NORTH KITSAP

KEDA has prepared a economic activity analysis of the updated North Kitsap United proposal for the Kingston Stakeholders Group. This proposed recreation campus in North Kitsap has the potential to generate more than $100 million in economic activity while addressing critical community needs like childcare, youth sports facilities, and access to health and wellness programs.

A Significant Economic Opportunity

Analysis from the Kitsap Economic Development Alliance estimates the project could generate more than $100 million in economic activity. This includes approximately $60 million in construction-related impact and $40 million in wages and job creation over a ten-year period, supporting around 190 jobs.

But the economic benefits go beyond construction and employment. By expanding access to childcare and recreation, NKU helps address workforce challenges and supports greater labor force participation across the region.

Addressing Critical Community Needs

North Kitsap faces a shortage of youth sports facilities and childcare options—two challenges that directly affect families and local employers.

The proposed YMCA would serve more than 10,000 residents and include approximately 100 childcare slots, helping parents return to work, pursue education, and increase long-term earning potential.

At the same time, new outdoor fields and recreation spaces would reduce the need for local teams to travel outside the county, keeping spending local and strengthening community connections.

Health, Wellness, and Long-Term Impact

Beyond economics, the NKU project supports healthier communities. YMCA programs are proven to improve physical and mental health outcomes, reduce chronic disease risk, and lower healthcare costs over time.

From youth sports to senior wellness programs, the facility would serve residents of all ages—building healthier habits and stronger social ties.

A Triple-Bottom-Line Investment

Few projects deliver across economic, social, and environmental outcomes. NKU stands out as a “triple bottom line” opportunity—generating economic activity while preserving open space and enhancing quality of life.

As Kitsap County continues to grow, projects like North Kitsap United highlight the power of thoughtful, community-driven investment. By aligning economic development with real community needs, NKU represents a vision for a stronger, more resilient future.
